I know my hamsters are evil clever - well, some of them. Ralf is too much of a little dude to be evil and I'm not sure on the clever bit either (my little bear of very little brain). Anyway, I can't imagine any of them being too enthusiastic about a maze without a food trail either. mostly because it's easier to see them sitting in a corner and cleaning for fifteen to twenty minutes, tasting the cardboard side of the maze and deciding it needs chewing, wandering around and right past the exit out... etc. I've learned that hammie motivation is a fickle thing - lol.
